Abortion Is A Or Medical Removal Of An Embryo - 1659 Words
Does life begin at the moment of conception? Or does life begin when the heart starts pumping and the brain starts to think. Some say that life does not begin until birth. The issue of abortion has been the subject of debate for several decades. Religions in Australia have influenced attitudes and laws with regards to this issue in the past. Are the attitudes and involvement of Australian religions in the abortion debate still relevant and do they make a difference? Abortion is a surgical or medical removal of an embryo or a fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy (Dictionary, 2016). Abortion in Australia has always been regulated by state law. However, previously before the end of the 19th century, each colony had adopted theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It was also found that religious belief and support for legal abortion are not mutually exclusive, with 77% of those who identify as religious also support a womanââ¬â¢s right to choose (Children by Choice, 2012). The attitudes towards abortion have changed over the years. Since the 1980ââ¬â¢s, opinion polls have shown that majority of Australians support abortion rights. In 1987 a poll conducted by Saulwick indicated about 7% of Australians would not approve of abortions under any circumstances. However, an ACNielsen poll in 2005 reported that 56% thought the current abortion laws, which generally allow abortion for the sake of life, health or economic factors, were fine, while 16% wanted a change in making abortion more accessible and 17% wanting to make changes to make it less accessible (Grattan, 2005). The debate regarding abortion among religions has been prominent for centuries. Many religions have different historical perspectives on the immorality of abortion, on whether it can ever be permitted, and how believers should respond (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, 2016). Buddhism regard abortion as morally wrong as it involves the deliberate destroying of a life. However, the Dalai Lama has spoken in favour of abortion under certain circumstances. He stated, Of course, abortion, from a Buddhist viewpoint, is an act of killing and is negative,
Evaluate the pluralist view of the ownership and control of the mass media free essay sample
There are a wide variety of conflicting views of the role of the mass media in society. There are two dominant views, the pluralist and Marxist theories of mass media, which shall be evaluated in depth during the course of this essay. The mass media is defined as, the means by which messages and images are communicated to a mass audience, through various ââ¬ËMass Communication Technologiesââ¬â¢ (MCTs). For example, the Internet is a very powerful and influential MCT, used for communicating and sharing important information worldwide. MCTs serve to educate, persuade and inform and entertain their audience. Pluralists believe that the mass media is reflective of social reality, and acts as a mirror. They say that the mass media has a functional role in meeting the demands of its mass audience, and owes a duty to the people. Marxists argue, the mass media constructs desires and creates social reality based on the rich and powerful peopleââ¬â¢s views. In other words, Marxists believe that it is a sculptor of a worldview and distorts social reality, which is based on exploitation of a powerless majority. This makes it an ideological tool of the powerful bourgeoisie and reflects their interests predominantly. Pluralists believe that the view of the mass media is to ensure that society consists of complex competing groups and interests, which all interact with one another. These groups are important to an idealistic democratic society, where a neutral state provides them with equal access to resources and influence. Pluralists feel that the mass media are free of government control, the audience actively choose the version of reality that they absorb. Audiences provide feedback by conforming or disagreeing with a particular mediumââ¬â¢s view of reality. The media is seen as reflecting society, it does not have a significant role in changing it. Jones (1986), argues that radio news is ââ¬Å"neutral, balanced and fairâ⬠. This would mean that radio news is unbiased and reports facts. However, it must be noted that Jones is a correspondent on BBC radio, and is thus a biased source himself. The recent phone hacking scandal suggests that employees at News International newspapers have been prepared to break the law in order to secure information, which has infringed individual privacy. However some would argue that this story has come to light in the mass media, which illustrates its investigative qualities. This would provide support for the democratic pluralist approach to the study of the mass media and that if Rupert Murdochs plans to take full ownership of Sky are blocked, this would theoretically help to restrict the extent of monopoly ownership and control within the mass media. Recent trends in media ownership and control suggest that the number of companies controlling global mass media has significantly shrunk in recent years. Bagdikian (2004) notes that in 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the USA, but by 2004 media ownership was concentrated in seven corporations. Curran (2003), notes that ownership of British newspapers has always been concentrated in the hands of a few powerful ââ¬Ëpress baronsââ¬â¢, for example, in 1937, four men owned nearly one in every two national and local daily newspapers sold in Britain. Today, seven powerful individuals dominate the ownership of British national daily and Sunday newspapers. The content of commercial terrestrial television is mainly controlled by one company, ITV plc. Whilst access to satellite, cable and digital television in Britain is generally controlled by two companies ââ¬â News Corp, (Rupert Murdoch), which owns Sky, and Virgin Media (Richard Branson). Pluralists also argue that concentration of ownership is a product of economic rationality rather than political or sinister motives. It is driven by the need to keep costs low and to maximise profits. Globalisation too results from the need to find new audiences rather than from cultural imperialism. Pluralists argue that it is practically impossible for owners to interfere with the content of newspapers and television programmes because their businesses are economically far too complex for them to regularly interfere in the day-to-day running, or the content. Marxists argue that the economic system of Britain, capitalism, is characterised by great inequalities in wealth and income, which have been brought about by the exploitation of the labour power of the working classes. Marxists believe that in order to legitimate and reproduce this system of inequality, the capitalist class uses its cultural power to dominate institutions like education and the mass media and transmit ruling class ideology. The function of these agencies is to socialise the working class into accepting the legitimacy of the capitalist system and capitalist ideas through what the mass mediated news is feeding its audiences. The audiences are expected to passively accept what they are being ââ¬Ëfedââ¬â¢. Consequently, Marxists argue working class people experience false class-consciousness ââ¬â they come to accept that capitalism is a just system that benefits all social groups equally. They fail to see the reality of their situation that they are being exploited by a system that only benefits a powerful minority.

The Aesthetics of Korean Art Essay Example For Students
The Aesthetics of Korean Art Essay First and foremost, I think Korean art is realized by its love for naturalness. In everything from architecture to everyday furniture and ornaments to paintings, this aspect of Korean aesthetism is shown. If you look at the furniture pieces made of wood from the Koryo and Chosun period, you can see that most of the furniture, except for some of the luxurious ones used in court, have their natural wooden texture to it, unlike the furniture or ornaments of China or Japan. Chinese and Japanese people tried to artificially decorate their ornaments whereas Korean people left it at their most natural state and appreciated it that way. This aspect is also seen in paintings, too. Landscape painters like An Kyun, Jung Sun and Kim Hong Do tried to show the natural state of Korean landscapes rather than idealizing it or copying landscapes of Chinese painters. You can see the distinct characteristices of Korean landscapes, especially in the paintings of Jung Sun. Architecture also follows the na tural lines of the mountains surrounding it, and is built around its natural environment rather than abolishing hills to make a perfectly ideal structure of architecture. All this appreciation for nature comes from the basic philosophy of Koreans taking to their natural peaceful environment, as is said by the late Professor Kim Wonyong. This is why when we see Korean art, we feel the overwhelming grandness yet familiarity and comfort of nature. This is also why it feels so ordinary, rather than initially decorated. We will write a custom essay on The Aesthetics of Korean Art specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now However, Korean art is much more than its naturalness. Along with this comfortable feeling, Korean art sometimes has a powerful splendour to it, shown mostly in court art. The use of primary colors in luxurious patterns is another face of Korean art that shows that Koreans also loved decorativeness in their art, which in some senses is contrary to the naturalness. Court paintings surrounding the king or furniture used by the royalty were full of brilliant floral designs and idealistic animals. Costumes for special occasions were full of colors and patterns in such detail that it would sometimes be difficult to absorb it all in one sight. These two aspects combined together, Korean art is about being a whole. It is not just looking at one side of a picture. Although some painters like Shin Yoon Bok and Kim Hong Do showed common everyday life images and An Kyun on the other hand showed the dream world, along with the overpowering nature, Korean art as a whole is both sides together. One cannot describe Korean art by showing only one of these aspects. This is why Professor Kims opinion in Korean art being ordinary and possessing an inexhaustible flavour and depth cannot better explain its characteristics. This sense of wholeness is in other words about humanity. Like the everyday natural lives of the common Koreans, shown in genre paintings by Shin Yoon Bok or Kim Hong Do, it is comfortableand humane. It shows how people go on living, even giving a peek of what lurks in the minds of people in their natural state of instinct, the most common example being voyeurism. Yet it has an idealism to it that shows the dreams of these people and their aspirations. It shows through great landscapes that nature is a scale beyond the human power and through detailed decorations that Korean people are also artistic in every way imaginable. Although all art is artificial to some point, it being something that has gone through the conscience of the human mind, Korean art can be described as the closest to the human lives itself. The naturalism stated by Professor Kim comes from this philosophy of humanism behind everything. Korean art, as a whole, is really art about human beings, the Korean people themselves. .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .postImageUrl , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:hover , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:visited , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:active { border:0!important; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:active , .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7 .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8a9854f56eef039dcec195cd8d67e0d7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Oppenheimer And The Atomic Bomb Persuasive EssayBibliography:

Free Essays on Cisco Systems
Overall impression of Ciscoââ¬â¢s business model ââ¬â strengths/weaknesses: I found that Cisco has changed its business model several times to reflect changing market needs and economies. In 1993, Cisco had to realize that the growth of the Internet was creating a demand for technology other than their routers. They set about adopting a strategy to become either the number 1 or number 2 player in each market.
